Thinking back to my interview in February, I remember a few things that stood out greatly about the organization and that made me want to be part of the team.
- The needs of the animals come first and foremost
- Volunteers and staff are incredibly hard working and passionate
- There is a lot of space for the animals to run, hide, and just be themselves
- The sanctuary is green and lush and beautiful
- Unfortunately, the law in the US is not very protective towards animals. BCR is working very hard to change this and to educate the public
- Hearing Joseph, the lion, roar as I was walking to work in the morning
- Seeing Sabre, the black leopard, in person
- Listening to the story of Alex, the tiger, and crying
- Being touched by the keeper’s long term dedication and love for the animals
- Seing Tonga, the white serval, prancing around with his food
- Making eye contact with Zabu, the white tiger, and being in awe
- Attending four tours, and learning a ton about the animals and the sanctuary
- Visiting the cemetery and remembering the animals that have passed
It’s going to be a challenge to be so far from home, and I certainly will miss my three boys, but I am certain that dedicating three months to the care of such amazing creatures is going to be worth it.
